PITCH FRAMES

When we pitched the idea it was all about reflecting the rebellious spirit of the movie. We tried to combine wood cut aesthetic with street art, defacing posters, glass shattering, rioting and typography.

“THIS NEEDS TO LOOK LIKE A HOMEMADE MEDIEVAL COMIC BOOK”

Our client requested a very specific look, we were facing with a fun design challenge, what would a home made comic book look like in medieval times? So we tried to take our wood cut style, rebellion aesthetic and put it in a comic book. Frank Miller was a very big inspiration as well as very old woodcut illustrations.

MOTION TESTS
“DON’T FAKE IT, LET’S DESIGN THE ACTUAL COMIC BOOK”

We decided that it would be much better and fun if we actually design the comic book. So we ended up designing actual pages and choreograph the camera movements on the pages as below. This gave us a lot of freedom and flexibility during animation process.

FRAMES
EVERY COMIC BOOK HAS A BOOK COVER, RIGHT?

The intro animation started as a simple 2D animation and evolved into a photorealistic 3D comic book reveal. And the color of the cover was initially selected as red but imagining how would a homemade comic book look like in the medieval times, made us change the cover to a brown embossed leather book cover.
